Standing in the Fire

"bush fires are frequent and the seeds of many plants are not only resistant...but seldom germinate...unless fire has passed over...." --John Cloudsley-Thompson

Standing in the fire
my mind explodes with vision earth in flames
technicolor images of sunlight
of death
I see myself giving birth
the last woman
my thighs stretching wide
to receive cold forceps
spit out red wet flesh of my flesh
his flesh
soothing away fears that come
late at night in the center
of a four poster bed
my face turned from his
I feel his premature passion
his welcome thirst for my blood
I feel the burning
heat of his eyes on me
heat of the sun
I push hard
throwing this child of ours
into the world
into the fire
